Wanna Beat Imposter Syndrome?
JFDI
When Penguin invited me to record an audiobook, Imposter Syndrome came for me hard. Books are my world, my whole pre-triplet life was studying and creating books.
This opportunity felt so HUGE I was terrified.
Do you ever have that feeling when something matters so much, that when it finally happens you’re a bit scared of it?
Would I stumble over my words? Would the studio staff roll their eyes? Could I handle the emotion of sharing my story on miscarriage and trauma? Would I be a hot mess?
But I’ve wasted too much of my energy on self-doubt already.
Once I decided to show up and enjoy myself there wasn’t much my Imposter Syndrome could do. It had nothing to work with. It was out of ammo.
The result? I nailed it. And even got offered work as a voice-over artist!
What you can do when Imposter Syndrome Strikes
JFDI (Yes, Just Fucking Do It)
J - Just Breathe
Give yourself a quiet moment to ground and reset.
F - Flip the Script
Imposter Syndrome will have served up a lot of fake news. Choose a different story.
D - Draw on Your Support System
Not just your friends but also any contact who may be able to help. One mama in this group is a professional voice-over artists so guess who got the frantic call the day before I went into the studio?
I - Imagine the possibilities
Instead of fixating on what could go wrong. How cool would it be if this went right? Where could that lead you? Sit in that energy and you’ll be excited to do it pretty soon.
What would you do if Imposter Syndrome wasn’t talking you out of it?
